"Grad Student in Need of a Quick Learn" 2009-11-19
By Jack Bauer
I'm a graduate student in psychology and I need to learn some math fairly quickly for my studies. So not being a "dummy", I decided to leave the "guide" to the idiots and buy a book to "demystify" concepts I learned long ago, and teach me new ones I have not yet come across. The book has been great so far and is worth the buy!

I am a teacher and have just moved to another state. I am tutoring a pre-calculus student who needes an "accessible" text to augment his textbook. The company from which I ordered this product had such a quick turn-around that I was able to deliver the book to my student within a week. This was a big relief, and I was quite impressed.

"How to Make Precalculus Mystifying" 2009-02-19
By G. Wright (Sussex)
Books with titles such as X "Made Easy" or X "Demystified" should always be treated with caution and suspicion. And this is one of them. I have worked through Algebra Demystified and was pleasently surprised - but this volume did justify its title. Thinking that the same author would do something along the same lines with Precalculus Demystified - I was very disappointed. I'm not a complete dunderhead in maths but I did expect somewhat more of an explanation at each step. A word or two of WHY so-and-so is done in precalculus would not have gone amiss. This book is just another maths book with next to no explanation - just examples and problems. Some graphical illustration, for example, in Chapter 4 would have been enormously helpful. My volume is going cheap on Amazon second hand market.

The Barnett, Ziegler, and Byleen, "College Algebra" series is designed to be user friendly and to maximize student comprehension. The goal of this series is to emphasize computational skills, ideas, and problem solving rather than mathematical theory. "Precalculus" introduces a unit circle approach to trigonometry and can be used in one or two semester college algebra with trig or precalculus courses. The large number of pedagogical devices employed in this text will guide a student through the course.Integrated throughout the text, students and instructors will find Explore-Discuss boxes which encourage students to think critically about mathematical concepts. In each section, the worked examples are followed by matched problems that reinforce the concept being taught. In addition, the text contains an abundance of exercises and applications that will convince students that math is useful. A Smart CD is packaged with the seventh edition of the book. This CD reinforces important concepts, and provides students with extra practice problems.

After working through the author's linear algebra done right book I came across this precalculus book. There is no better book. It has complete - and I mean complete - worked out solutions for all the odd problems. I know many students who have suffered through incredibly badly written books dealing with this subject and most, if not all, of them are. This book is a rigorous introduction to calculus - by this I mean that this book develops all ideas logically that a high school student can understand without an instructor - yes, without an instructor. All the usual topics of precalculus are covered in this book - only much better. Buy this for yourself, for your high schooler child and if you are a math teacher in a high school, at the very least, pilot this book!

"Excellent Excercise Book but some mistakes and no errata???" 2009-06-06
By Mario Ghecea (Burbank, CA)
It seems the authors break their own rule in the first chapter on PEMDAS. This is a simple problem, but they wrote it out wrong in answers where they perform addition and subtraction first before multiplication. I think it should be the other way around. i.e. Ex 4 - Ch 1. abs(5 * 1 - 4 + 6) = 7 not 9. Every monkey knows multiplication is performed first. I'm not sure what the authors were thinking starting with subtraction first???I'm kinda blushing here...I punched this into my TI-89 Titanium and I get the same answer as I had come up with for the nominator. Calculators follow PEMDAS rule, so am I missing something here? Please, put an errata up people and have a forum, otherwise your books are useless. This is a refresher for me as I'm going in for calculus next fall. Mistakes as such would flunk a student in those courses...

"Figure 5.5 illustrates this last step, which yields the parent log's graph". If you look at the graph, it is labeled f(x)=log^x. The parent log being graphed is f(x)=logx. Two very different equations.

"Good book but not perfect" 2008-05-26
By Bruno
The aim of this book is to introduce the subjects of pre-calculus in an easy, yet complete way. For the most part it accomplish it's objective, nevertheless, it has some typos and errors that will cause the student to get confused (i.e. the first time the student is shown the formula for the difference of cubes the book says something like this (a-b)(a^2+ab+b^3) which is wrong and in latter examples the formula takes the correct form of (a-b)(a^2+ab+b^2) which causes some confusion). Overall, this is a very good book specially for a review of the subjects.

UPDATE

P.105 Changing a Log's Base

log5/log3 does not equal ln3/ln5... it should read log5/log3 = ln5/ln3.

Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn Series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and providing strong connections. Not only does Coburn present a sound problem-solving process to teach students to recognize a problem, organize a procedure, and formulate a solution, the text encourages students to see beyond procedures in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the big ideas behind mathematical concepts.

Written in a readable, yet mathematically mature manner appropriate for college algebra level students, Coburn’s Precalculus uses narrative, extensive examples, and a range of exercises to connect seemingly disparate mathematical topics into a cohesive whole. Coburn’s hallmark applications are born out of the author’s extensive experiences in and outside the classroom, and appeal to the vast diversity of students and teaching methods in this course area.

Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, Precalculus second edition, continues to emphasize connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in college algebra.

I will say though, it was nice that the book is relatively thin compared to other calculus textbooks I saw my friends lugging around. The textbook was precise and to the point.

These authors have created a book to really help students visualize mathematics for better comprehension. By creating algebraic visual side-by-sides to solve various problems in the examples, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution. In addition, the authors have added a variety of new tools to help students better use the book for maximum effectiveness to not only pass the course, but truly understand the material.

 "Not too pleased" 2009-09-09
By M. Morales
The book was described as "New-used" but was far from that. The edges were torn, there was writing on 3 sides of the book in bright pink marker (impossible to hide). If it was described as "Used" I might have accepted the condition of the book. There was no writing in the book, but the outside look ridiculous. When I use a book, I don't write inside it, and I certainly don't write my name on every side of the book. The word new should be no where near the description of this book.

This review applies to all books written by Marvin Bittinger. I have used

his books on elementary algebra, college algebra, precalculus, and calculus. His writing is clear, concise, and always on the level of the

maturity of his audience. The examples are excellent and the problems are

suitable for each book. He doesn't "dumb down" the material nor is the

presentation overly rigorous. I wish he would right a full blown 1,000 -

1,200 page three semester text for calculus.

The author does a good job of providing appropriate graphics to aid in the student's comprehension, but the text is woefully lacking. My professor, thankfully, used the book only for the exercises, which are quite extensive. Whenever I had difficulty grasping an idea and referred to the text I became completely confused, so I began recording my class and playing it back for a clear explanation. I am the type of student who can learn on my own, but that could never happen with this book.

As the best-seller in its field, Precalculus, 5/e, offers both instructors and students a more solid, comprehensive, and flexible program than ever before. Designed for the one- or two-term precalculus course, the text opens with moderate algebra review and introduces trigonometry first with a unit circle approach and then with the right triangle.

For a complete listing of features, see Larson/Hostetler, College Algebra, 5/e.

 "A Comprehensive Precalculus Textbook" 2009-11-12
By M. Larsson (Bay Area, CA)
I had originally taken a precalculus course at a community college and used a different book from this one. In addition to using an inferior book, the instructor also decided to skip over trigonometry altogether. It was mainly due to this fact that I decided to pick up this book and learn trig on my own (as well as review algebra) as I entered calculus and found the need for it absolutely essential, and I'm glad I did. The book is laid out in a very reader-friendly format, which tends to be rare with mathematics textbooks. Each chapter is concise, the examples given are formatted to give a true representation of the end-of-chapter questions. The book does not assume that "the other half" of the information presented is being explained by an instructor, keeping each chapter-section self-contained and easily understood. This is exactly the book I wish I'd had years ago when I began toying with the idea of self-study to prepare for calculus placement tests, and certainly the book I wish I'd had when I took precalculus. I'll be keeping this book, along with the solutions guide, on my bookshelf permanently as a reference book for my calculus classes and beyond.

I did not get a chance to try out the companion-software on the CD-ROM, so I cannot give a fair review of it. I can, however, recommend this book to students wanting to do self-study, those wanting a supplement to their existing precalculus textbook, and to teachers looking for a text to use in their classes. Now, if only my calculus textbook was as clear and concise, I'd be in great shape. . .

 "Popular yet ordinary book!" 2006-09-26
By Physicsmind (CA United States)
Richard Feynman, one of America's greatest physicists, once said most of the popular textbooks (on physics) were somewhat mediocre. Larson has written one that is much better than the rest. everything is explained clearly. However, I would recommend those who are aspired for an austere treatment of elementary mathematics, ie, pre-calculus and beginning calculus, to go for the book High-school mathematics by some Russian mathematicians. ISBN: 5030010114 This series is just so comprehensive with lucid explanations that every high school math teacher should take a look at it. It's both fun and benefitial to read books on math translated from another language.

 "Piece of Sh**!" 2006-01-26
By Maria Lynn
I have this book sadly for one of my classes.

It gives the answers to all the odd problems, but doesn't show how that answer was obtained. So basically its just gives answers with no steps showing how.

It gives problems for you to do, without showing you how. I guess your suppose to be a genius and magically figure it out.

There are a good bit of problems that the do show you how to do (to be fair), but I still think that's total BS.

I'm failing my class and I looked to the book for reference, and it did no good. I'm going to have to drop it.

"A gem. But beware of Amazon bugs!" 2004-11-24
By MaxiMiner
I reported them to Amazon months ago - nothing's changed.

There are two different books on amazon.com:

BOOK 1: "Precalculus 5/e" by Larson & Hostetler (search for 0618052852 on amazon.com). It has a very good supplement - "Study and Solutions Guide" by Dianna Zook (0618072713).

Both books were published by Houghton Mifflin Company, which has nice resource site http://college.hmco.com/mathematics/students/.

I have no affiliation with this publisher. From the pull-down "Precalculus" window Select Title "Precalculus 5/e Larson/Hostetler ((c)2001)". You'll be very pleased with the links you find there. If you seriously want to ace Precalculus - get both - "Precalculus" and "Study...".

BOOK 2: "Precalculus Functions and Graphs: A Graphing Approach/Precalculus With Limits: A Graphing Approach (Student Study Guide)" by Larson (0618074104).

Here's one bug:

Somehow reviews posted for BOOK 1 got mirrored onto BOOK 2 or vice versa (compare books' reviews).

Another bug:

Book 2 in reality has a title "Study and Solution Guide" and its authors are Bruce Edwards and Dianna Zook (not Larson). Compare it with "Study and Solutions Guide for Precalculus Functions and Graphs : A Graphing Approach and: Precalculus With Limits : A Graphing Approach" (0669417297), which is older: 2/e, (c)1997.

Book 2 gives solutions to odd-numbered excersizes and to all Chapter Practice Tests and to Chapter and Cumulative Tests in both "Precalculus Functions and Graphs...3/e" (0618052909) and "Precalculus with Limits...3/e" (0618052917).

Those two books were published in 2001 by Houghton Mifflin Company. On http://college.hmco.com/mathematics/students/ from the pull-down "Precalculus" window select either of their titles. Click on "Purchase this Product or Study Aides" and you'll see the whole learning package which includes aforementioned "Study and Solution Guide" ISBN: (0-618-07410-4) (for some reason Bruce Edwards is dropped and only Dianna Zook is listed as author; apparently, amazon.com doesn't hold monopoly on making mistakes).

Make sure you are reading reviews relevant to the book you consider buying.
