Neil Campbell and Jane Reece's BIOLOGY remains unsurpassed as the most successful majors biology textbook in the world. This text has invited more than 4 million students into the study of this dynamic and essential discipline. The authors have restructured each chapter around a conceptual framework of five or six big ideas. An Overview draws students in and sets the stage for the rest of the chapter, each numbered Concept Head announces the beginning of a new concept, and Concept Check questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to assess their mastery of a given concept. New Inquiry Figures focus students on the experimental process, and new Research Method Figures illustrate important techniques in biology. Each chapter ends with a Scientific Inquiry Question that asks students to apply scientific investigation skills to the content of the chapter.

This is great biology textbook with thorough explanations and helpful images. A plurality of high schools and universities will use this book for its core biology classes, making it a great resource even after the class(es) is over.

However, there is a newer 8th edition, so PLEASE either buy that edition new/used or this one used (which is actually very cheap comparatively).

These applications help answer the question “When will I ever use this?” Readers stay engaged because the book helps them remain focused as they study. The three-step learning system–See It, Hear It, Try It–makes examples easy to follow, while frequent annotations offer the support and guidance of an instructor’s voice. Every page is interesting and relevant, ensuring that readers will actually use their textbook to achieve success!

 "Great to use" 2009-09-29
By Casey Martinson (California City, CA)
This book is better than the Larson text I have (7th edition). Even though it's second edition and chopped off about five or so chapters near the end to make it less than a full Pre-Calculus book. I recommend it to anyone struggling with the algebra portion of their course. He explains the concepts clearly, takes you through the example problems step-by-step, and for those people interested in applications of a subject or those notes about math that make it interesting, it's all here. The imagery ain't too bad either.

I definitely didn't know if it was all hype over this one author about how good he was at writing math texts, but I ordered mine (you can get this book for less than a dollar! great deal) and am very pleased with the outcome. It's very engaging in that he keeps you interested in what you're doing. When in doubt I definitely referred back to this book because there would be a problem or two that wasn't in my Larson text that my teacher would pull out of her [...] and it'd be similar to an example problem in this text. Anyway, I usually study from it.

Buy it, it's cheap and is worth every cent for the quality of writing and learning you'll be receiving.

 "precalculus" 2006-09-13
By M. O'Brien (l.a)
I hate this book. It only gives a few solutions, maybe 5 out of a 100 (if your lucky). I don't know if I am doing my work right or not. There is no way to check. Every math book I have had gives answers to odd# questions in the back, this is very helpful to see if you are going in the right direction. Not this book. You can spend hours and not know that you are doing it completely wrong. This does not help if you have 300 problems to do, and a week before class meets.

"Precalculus book with minor imperfections!" 2005-05-28
By Iggy S. (Bell, CA United States)
This textbook is one excellent aid for understanding math. The trigonometry section is the best part of the book. It is mostly self explanatory, and being that trig is one hard topic to understand, the book breaks it down to a comprehensible level. My only problem with the book is that it contains way too many word problems, which most students would like to skip. The concept checks are also a pain in the butt. My professor assigns basically all the odd problems in the section, taking me a whole day to finish the homework. There are other minor annoyances in the book. For example, the harmonic motion section only provides one example for the whole section. A good thing to have is the solutions manual. There are also way too many things to cover, and this leaves you somewaht overwhelmed. On the other hand, Lial and Hornsby provide straight forward examples, which, are sometimes way to easy in comparison to the practice problems provided. This book is however, a quality book and well presented.

This text, intended for a graphing calculator required precalculus course, shows students when and how to use concepts, and promotes real understanding not just rote memorization. In addition, the graphing calculator is used as a tool to help explain ideas rather than merely to find answers. The book reflects AMATYC, MAA, and NCTM guidelines, and makes use of real world data in presenting a balanced algebraic and graphical approach to understanding precalculus concepts. The result is a thorough preparation for the calculus course.

"Precalculus text disorganized and lacking in rigour" 2007-12-06
By Cornelis F. du Toit (MD USA)
My son is using this textbook at school in a 10th grade pre-calculus course. As a microwave antenna engineer I take a strong interest in my son's science and maths education, and try to help with supplementary material where I think it is needed. When I read the first sentence in the book, which states that "a real number is any number that can be written as a decimal", my heart sank. The language usage is as poor as the accuracy of the statement, and it did not bode well for what the rest of the book may offer. It then proceeds to explain that the set of real numbers contains several important subsets, and calls out the natural numbers, whole numbers and the integers out in 3 clearly separated paragraphs. But this is followed by a discussion on the use of brackets, before the rational numbers and later, the irrational numbers are described - you have to read the text carefully before it is clear that these are two more subsets of the real numbers. Clearly marked paragraphs for these subsets would have worked better.

While skimming though the rest of the textbook, my initial misgivings were confirmed by the general lack of rigour, and the over-emphasis on terms, formulas and nomenclature without consistently explaining and/or proving how these are derived. A good example of this is the formulas given in Chapter 3, pp. 334-341 for annuities and mortgages without any proof or explanation. These are presented as examples of exponential functions, but in doing so the mathematics is reduced to a subject more akin to the learning of facts rather than learning the art of deduction. It would have been better to present the section on finance after the section on geometric series, since you need that to explain the formulas. Indeed, the book admits to this "loose end" in Chapter 9, where it belatedly derives one of these formulas, i.e. the future value of an annuity, p. 743.

The text is well illustrated, with attractive and colourful tables, graphs and pictures. But the content should be better organized with more attention to rigour, thus I would not recommend this book.

 "precalc-demana etal" 2003-08-26
By (Morris, MN)
The topics in this text have enough breadth to cover
Functions (algebraic, transcendentals, etc) and their Graphs.

One typical feature that is extremely disturbing is the fact that the authors decided to throw in mathematical terms without
defining them first. For instance, as early as Chapter 1.2,
the term "lim f(x) as x approaches ***" is introduced so that
the graphical concept "continuity" can be taught.
There is much more to
limits than just "plotting the graph, seeing where the curve goes". The purpose of PreCalc as suggested by its name is to prepare the students to take Calculus. And if we do not want to
cover some concepts correctly (algebraically and graphically - the motto of this text!) but only to do it in a touchy-feely sense, then please do NOT cover it in PreCalc. Do it in Calculus!

The only reason I ever used this is because someone else chose it for our multiple sections course!

 "Eh" 2009-10-10
By James (Port Arthur, Tx United States)
This book unfortunately assumes the student knows EVERYTHING about algebra and trigonometry and thus only needs a tiny review without any detail. Unless you're math-brained, that's typically not the case. More examples like the exercises presented would be a tops, instead of just the bare bones on how to do something similar to it and then expect the student to be able to do the rest.

These authors have created a book to really help students visualize mathematics for better comprehension. By creating algebraic visual side-by-sides to solve various problems in the examples, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution. In addition, the authors have added a variety of new tools to help students better use the book for maximum effectiveness to not only pass the course, but truly understand the material.

By M. Morales
The book was described as "New-used" but was far from that. The edges were torn, there was writing on 3 sides of the book in bright pink marker (impossible to hide). If it was described as "Used" I might have accepted the condition of the book. There was no writing in the book, but the outside look ridiculous. When I use a book, I don't write inside it, and I certainly don't write my name on every side of the book. The word new should be no where near the description of this book.

This review applies to all books written by Marvin Bittinger. I have used

his books on elementary algebra, college algebra, precalculus, and calculus. His writing is clear, concise, and always on the level of the

maturity of his audience. The examples are excellent and the problems are

suitable for each book. He doesn't "dumb down" the material nor is the

presentation overly rigorous. I wish he would right a full blown 1,000 -

1,200 page three semester text for calculus.

The author does a good job of providing appropriate graphics to aid in the student's comprehension, but the text is woefully lacking. My professor, thankfully, used the book only for the exercises, which are quite extensive. Whenever I had difficulty grasping an idea and referred to the text I became completely confused, so I began recording my class and playing it back for a clear explanation. I am the type of student who can learn on my own, but that could never happen with this book.

This best selling author team explains concepts simply and clearly, without glossing over difficult points. Problem solving and mathematical modeling are introduced early and reinforced throughout, so that when students finish the course, they have a solid foundation in the principles of mathematical thinking. This comprehensive, evenly paced book provides complete coverage of the function concept and integrates substantial graphing calculator materials that help students develop insight into mathematical ideas. The authors' attention to detail and clarity, as in James Stewart's market-leading Calculus text, is what makes this text the market leader.

"Doesn't come with even numbered work exercises" 2009-07-31
By E. G. (Seattle, WA USA)
When the teacher assigns homework, he assigns problems that would be relevant to what he wants you to learn. Sometimes those assignments include numbers that are even. Why would it just give you the odd problems? The product on the title and on the cover should indicate that it only has odd numbered problems in it.

"Excellent Book to learn precalculus" 2009-03-31
By L. Figueroa (New Jersey)
I selected this book primarily because I needed a book to go over the topic area with my son and it was one of the textbooks available on cramster.com (which is web site that has the problem solutions for popular college textbooks). It is very readable and has many exercises (probably more than the average person would ever need). The really nice feature that I wish I had when I was learning this material (way back when) was the use of many graphs, diagrams and the graphing calculator to illustrate the concepts and ideas. In addition, the end of every section has very thoughtful exercises that go beyond the tedious and repetitive problem solving route. Lastly, the chapter test helps to prepare for any real class exams.

As a parent of a college age student I wondered about the outrageous prices being demanded by college textbooks today - are they worth it? Well, this one is....and I purchased two books, one of me and my son and I am not disappointed. I have not even explored the online features available to assist students yet. In summary , all these features provided and the adherence by the authors to a positive pedagogical approach that benefits students add value to the book and make it worth while for anyone taking the course on their own or in a classroom.

I cannot sit here and say that this book will give you any more knowledge if you had to pick some other book on a topic of precalculus. It was a requirement in my college and so i bought it. Overall, if i had to use just this book then i would be ok because it gives sufficient amount of information and examples to support your knowledge about precalculus. Even though, some precalculus background that you may have prior would be of much help.
