Part of the market-leading Graphing Approach Series by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards, Precalculus Functions and Graphs: A Graphing Approach, 5/e, is an ideal student and instructor resource for courses that require the use of a graphing calculator. The quality and quantity of the exercises, combined with interesting applications and innovative resources, make teaching easier and help students succeed. Continuing the series' emphasis on student support, the Fifth Edition introduces Prerequisite Skills Review. For selected examples throughout the text, the Prerequisite Skills Review directs students to previous sections in the text to review concepts and skills needed to master the material at hand. In addition, prerequisite skills review exercises in Eduspace are referenced in every exercise set. The Larson team achieves accessibility through careful writing and design, including examples with detailed solutions that begin and end on the same page, which maximizes the readability of the text. Similarly, side-by-side solutions show algebraic, graphical, and numerical representations of the mathematics and support a variety of learning styles.

 "Apparently I Can't Speak PhD Mathematics" 2008-06-12
By J. Avery (Michigan)
If your professor is planning on doing an accelerated summer course complete with the book's online functionality, drop the course. The whole book is example based with no explanation as to simple things such as "Why?" or "How?". It's all quite simply this does this, which leads to this, and you finally get that. It will probably work for the people that were calculus addicts in high school, but for an introductory college calculus course for people like me with no prior exposure except high level algebra, it seems that Larson goes with the stereotypical mathematician mindset. That is, he has a PhD in math and he wants you to know it by showing you a lot of arbitrary numbers and terminology without explanation to show how humbling math can be, how little an introductory college student can hope to gain, and to justify having the price tag above $100 and the special online code another $60 if you buy used. The website is just as useless because it's just an online version of the text complete with the exact same examples and practice problems. That is if you can get into the site since it's so buggy. It often times out and wipes your homework AND EXAMS IN PROGRESS which leads to it constantly being down for maintenance. Overall, unless you had pre-calc in high school, it shouldn't be a problem, but if you're just stepping into the subject get a different book or an excellent professor.

This text, intended for a graphing calculator required precalculus course, shows students when and how to use concepts, and promotes real understanding not just rote memorization. In addition, the graphing calculator is used as a tool to help explain ideas rather than merely to find answers. The book reflects AMATYC, MAA, and NCTM guidelines, and makes use of real world data in presenting a balanced algebraic and graphical approach to understanding precalculus concepts. The result is a thorough preparation for the calculus course.

"Precalculus text disorganized and lacking in rigour" 2007-12-06
By Cornelis F. du Toit (MD USA)
My son is using this textbook at school in a 10th grade pre-calculus course. As a microwave antenna engineer I take a strong interest in my son's science and maths education, and try to help with supplementary material where I think it is needed. When I read the first sentence in the book, which states that "a real number is any number that can be written as a decimal", my heart sank. The language usage is as poor as the accuracy of the statement, and it did not bode well for what the rest of the book may offer. It then proceeds to explain that the set of real numbers contains several important subsets, and calls out the natural numbers, whole numbers and the integers out in 3 clearly separated paragraphs. But this is followed by a discussion on the use of brackets, before the rational numbers and later, the irrational numbers are described - you have to read the text carefully before it is clear that these are two more subsets of the real numbers. Clearly marked paragraphs for these subsets would have worked better.

While skimming though the rest of the textbook, my initial misgivings were confirmed by the general lack of rigour, and the over-emphasis on terms, formulas and nomenclature without consistently explaining and/or proving how these are derived. A good example of this is the formulas given in Chapter 3, pp. 334-341 for annuities and mortgages without any proof or explanation. These are presented as examples of exponential functions, but in doing so the mathematics is reduced to a subject more akin to the learning of facts rather than learning the art of deduction. It would have been better to present the section on finance after the section on geometric series, since you need that to explain the formulas. Indeed, the book admits to this "loose end" in Chapter 9, where it belatedly derives one of these formulas, i.e. the future value of an annuity, p. 743.

The text is well illustrated, with attractive and colourful tables, graphs and pictures. But the content should be better organized with more attention to rigour, thus I would not recommend this book.

The topics in this text have enough breadth to cover
Functions (algebraic, transcendentals, etc) and their Graphs.

One typical feature that is extremely disturbing is the fact that the authors decided to throw in mathematical terms without
defining them first. For instance, as early as Chapter 1.2,
the term "lim f(x) as x approaches ***" is introduced so that
the graphical concept "continuity" can be taught.
There is much more to
limits than just "plotting the graph, seeing where the curve goes". The purpose of PreCalc as suggested by its name is to prepare the students to take Calculus. And if we do not want to
cover some concepts correctly (algebraically and graphically - the motto of this text!) but only to do it in a touchy-feely sense, then please do NOT cover it in PreCalc. Do it in Calculus!

The only reason I ever used this is because someone else chose it for our multiple sections course!

Clear explanations, an uncluttered and appealing layout, and examples and exercises featuring a variety of real-life applications have made this text popular among students year after year. This latest edition of Swokowski and Cole's PRECALCULUS: FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS retains these features. The problems have been consistently praised for being at just the right level for precalculus students like you. The book also provides calculator examples, including specific keystrokes that show you how to use various graphing calculators to solve problems more quickly. Perhaps most important-this book effectively prepares you for further courses in mathematics.

 "TERRIBLE BOOK!" 2010-01-14
By Orlando (Silver Spring, MD USA)
If you have to buy this for a college class, then your are stuck. But if you learning precalculus on your own, stay away from this book! First, the book lacks clarity. You are left wondering what's going on. Secondly, no thoroughness. It supposedly 'teaches' a section then you are off to the next. Lastly, it dives into 'heavy' and sometimes irrelevant material, making the student feel lost. Not sure what's going on with this book? I got all As in Math -- This book is terrible!

This book made learning Precalculus so easy. Everything the author said was perfectly clear. The examples allowed me to literally ace every test I had, and this was for College Pre-Cal! I recommend this to everyone who needs to take a PreCalculus class

 "Issues with Swokowski Precalculus" 2009-03-29
By Travis Miller (Illinois)
As one can tell from the other reviews this textbook is disliked by many who use it (or at least those that take the time to review it). Overall I must agree with many of the comments made by others, such as the fact that the book is not very clear with its explanations. It seems that while the authors try to be rigorous in their explanations (they explain things in a mathematically formal way) they forget that their audience is the student and not the professor.

An issue that no one else has mentioned is the authors fetish for simplifying every answer as much as possible. This is an issue that creates a lot of headaches when you try to do the world problems in the book, because although you may get close to the "answer" provided you will likely get lost trying to figure out the last few steps. More than once my professor has been left utterly confused as she tried to explain how the authors arrived at their final answer, luckily she does not force us to simplify as much as the authors do.

If you are a student who has to use this book you shouldn't let the other reviews scare you; While there are better textbooks out there this textbook is useable. However, your class will go a lot smoother if you have a good math professor.

 "DANGER swich your class!" 2009-03-10
By B.M.
This book, was obviously written by brilliant people. Unfortunately knowing mathematics does not mean you qualify for writing a book or being a teacher. Swokowski and Cole and the entire aid staff obviously have no real world teaching experience whatsoever. This book is written in pure mathematical theory, not english. I heave heard of leaning by immersion, but drowning the student in pure theory-talk without introducing it, extreme application problems, and a lack of clear cut ..anything, does not force the students to learn through struggle, it basically just overwhelms them into despair. The solution manual is a must, if you want a basic grasp of any of the presented concepts.

Look, if you can avoid using this book, please do so, at any cost. If you can't, then you need to move in with a tutor. Also, take the time to yell at your institution. You shouldn't be paying them to waist your time with this poor material.

Makes a great fix for a coffee table :D.

This new text embodies Sullivan/Sullivan’s hallmarks —  accuracy, precision, depth, strong student support, and abundant exercises while exposing students early (Chapter One) to the study of functions and taking a right triangle approach to trigonometry. "IT WORKS" for instructors and students because it focuses students on the fundamentals: preparing for class, practicing their homework, and reviewing. After completing the book, students will be prepared to handle the algebra found in subsequent courses such as finite mathematics, business mathematics, and engineering calculus and will have a solid understanding of the concept of a function.

Maybe it's because the instructor covers dissimilar material, but the book sucks compared to other math books I've had in the past. It gives you a few examples in each section and that's it. It doesn't explain thoroughly enough for me to understand. I suppose you don't really have a choice in using this textbook, but just know what to expect.

 "Eh" 2009-10-10
By James (Port Arthur, Tx United States)
This book unfortunately assumes the student knows EVERYTHING about algebra and trigonometry and thus only needs a tiny review without any detail. Unless you're math-brained, that's typically not the case. More examples like the exercises presented would be a tops, instead of just the bare bones on how to do something similar to it and then expect the student to be able to do the rest.
