 "Great to use" 2009-09-29
By Casey Martinson (California City, CA)
This book is better than the Larson text I have (7th edition). Even though it's second edition and chopped off about five or so chapters near the end to make it less than a full Pre-Calculus book. I recommend it to anyone struggling with the algebra portion of their course. He explains the concepts clearly, takes you through the example problems step-by-step, and for those people interested in applications of a subject or those notes about math that make it interesting, it's all here. The imagery ain't too bad either.

I definitely didn't know if it was all hype over this one author about how good he was at writing math texts, but I ordered mine (you can get this book for less than a dollar! great deal) and am very pleased with the outcome. It's very engaging in that he keeps you interested in what you're doing. When in doubt I definitely referred back to this book because there would be a problem or two that wasn't in my Larson text that my teacher would pull out of her [...] and it'd be similar to an example problem in this text. Anyway, I usually study from it.

Buy it, it's cheap and is worth every cent for the quality of writing and learning you'll be receiving.

"Grad Student in Need of a Quick Learn" 2009-11-19
By Jack Bauer
I'm a graduate student in psychology and I need to learn some math fairly quickly for my studies. So not being a "dummy", I decided to leave the "guide" to the idiots and buy a book to "demystify" concepts I learned long ago, and teach me new ones I have not yet come across. The book has been great so far and is worth the buy!

"How to Make Precalculus Mystifying" 2009-02-19
By G. Wright (Sussex)
Books with titles such as X "Made Easy" or X "Demystified" should always be treated with caution and suspicion. And this is one of them. I have worked through Algebra Demystified and was pleasently surprised - but this volume did justify its title. Thinking that the same author would do something along the same lines with Precalculus Demystified - I was very disappointed. I'm not a complete dunderhead in maths but I did expect somewhat more of an explanation at each step. A word or two of WHY so-and-so is done in precalculus would not have gone amiss. This book is just another maths book with next to no explanation - just examples and problems. Some graphical illustration, for example, in Chapter 4 would have been enormously helpful. My volume is going cheap on Amazon second hand market.

"(AUTHOR) Michelle Rose Gilman is a JERK !!!" 2009-08-30
By Joel
Like another reviewer, I too purchased this text to re-sharpen old math skills, and prepare for a Fall Semester of Calculus. The book is written well and set up intelligently, but there are simply scores and scores of awful mathematical errors. It enraged me. Every problem I have to not only "double check" my own work, but ALSO DOUBLE CHECK the work of the book creators: it's that painful.

Upon emailing the Author to inform her of her shortcomings in this book, she responded the following way:

"Dear Joel,

Yes, we are aware of the unfortunate errors found in the pre calc WB. We are in the process of making corrections to the 1st edition. All of the corrections should be on the Wiley website very soon. I take offense at your language [I did swear at her - she sucks whatever]. And for your information, the copyeditor and the tech editors proof a book."

SCREW HER! No updates have been posted "very soon" on the Wiley website. I sent her then ANOTHER email, offering to NOTE ALL the mathematical typos I found and send them TO her: essentially doing a lot of hard work for free... She has ignored my offer.

It appears Michelle Rose Gilman is content with a low grade product.

Bottom line - until the REVISED EDITION of this is in print, I would buy a different book. Hopefully though Michelle gets wise and LISTS those UPDATES on WILEY.

"Great idea, but a frustrating number of errors." 2009-07-17
By Michaela Stone
My copy showed up yesterday, and my experience has been less than positive. I already own Pre-Calculus for Dummies, but was getting weary from scouring the web for worksheets and quizzes to reinforce everything I was re-learning. (It's amazing how much you can forget after 10 years outside of the classroom.) This workbook was going to allow me to be sure that I was grasping all of the material, so that I could finally crack open that Calculus I textbook and get a jump-start on the fall semester.

I was very impressed with the first few problems, as they didn't waste time with simple examples. These were nitty-gritty, down-and-dirty problems that put my mettle to the test. So far, so good. Then we hit Chapter 2, and things went downhill fast. In the span of 3 pages (26-29), there were 4 glaring errors in either examples or practice problems. The first time I went through, I assumed it had to be me that was in error. I went back and tried the problems again...still no dice. I read the step-by-step solutions to the problems, and was left more confused than when I started. I ultimately verified with a few of my mathematically inclined friends that, somehow, the folks at Wiley Publishing put out a remedial math book without bothering to check their own answers first. Even the tear-out cheat sheet in the front of the book has errors in the trig identities. If I had been addressing the material for the first time, I would have given up in frustration by page 30.

I'm still convinced that the Pre-Calculus Workbook for Dummies could be one of the best resources for people interested in learning (or relearning) the math skills that will get them ready for college level calculus. It is shame that poor proofreading has turned it into such a source of frustration.

The Barnett, Ziegler, and Byleen, "College Algebra" series is designed to be user friendly and to maximize student comprehension. The goal of this series is to emphasize computational skills, ideas, and problem solving rather than mathematical theory. "Precalculus" introduces a unit circle approach to trigonometry and can be used in one or two semester college algebra with trig or precalculus courses. The large number of pedagogical devices employed in this text will guide a student through the course.Integrated throughout the text, students and instructors will find Explore-Discuss boxes which encourage students to think critically about mathematical concepts. In each section, the worked examples are followed by matched problems that reinforce the concept being taught. In addition, the text contains an abundance of exercises and applications that will convince students that math is useful. A Smart CD is packaged with the seventh edition of the book. After working through the author's linear algebra done right book I came across this precalculus book. There is no better book. It has complete - and I mean complete - worked out solutions for all the odd problems. I know many students who have suffered through incredibly badly written books dealing with this subject and most, if not all, of them are. This book is a rigorous introduction to calculus - by this I mean that this book develops all ideas logically that a high school student can understand without an instructor - yes, without an instructor. All the usual topics of precalculus are covered in this book - only much better. Buy this for yourself, for your high schooler child and if you are a math teacher in a high school, at the very least, pilot this book!

"Excellent Excercise Book but some mistakes and no errata???" 2009-06-06
By Mario Ghecea (Burbank, CA)
It seems the authors break their own rule in the first chapter on PEMDAS. This is a simple problem, but they wrote it out wrong in answers where they perform addition and subtraction first before multiplication. I think it should be the other way around. i.e. Ex 4 - Ch 1. abs(5 * 1 - 4 + 6) = 7 not 9. Every monkey knows multiplication is performed first. I'm not sure what the authors were thinking starting with subtraction first???I'm kinda blushing here...I punched this into my TI-89 Titanium and I get the same answer as I had come up with for the nominator. Calculators follow PEMDAS rule, so am I missing something here? Please, put an errata up people and have a forum, otherwise your books are useless. This is a refresher for me as I'm going in for calculus next fall. Mistakes as such would flunk a student in those courses...

"Good book but not perfect" 2008-05-26
By Bruno
The aim of this book is to introduce the subjects of pre-calculus in an easy, yet complete way. For the most part it accomplish it's objective, nevertheless, it has some typos and errors that will cause the student to get confused (i.e. the first time the student is shown the formula for the difference of cubes the book says something like this (a-b)(a^2+ab+b^3) which is wrong and in latter examples the formula takes the correct form of (a-b)(a^2+ab+b^2) which causes some confusion). Overall, this is a very good book specially for a review of the subjects.

UPDATE

P.105 Changing a Log's Base

log5/log3 does not equal ln3/ln5... it should read log5/log3 = ln5/ln3.

Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn Series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and providing strong connections. Not only does Coburn present a sound problem-solving process to teach students to recognize a problem, organize a procedure, and formulate a solution, the text encourages students to see beyond procedures in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the big ideas behind mathematical concepts.

Written in a readable, yet mathematically mature manner appropriate for college algebra level students, Coburn’s Precalculus uses narrative, extensive examples, and a range of exercises to connect seemingly disparate mathematical topics into a cohesive whole. Coburn’s hallmark applications are born out of the author’s extensive experiences in and outside the classroom, and appeal to the vast diversity of students and teaching methods in this course area.

Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, Precalculus second edition, continues to emphasize connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in college algebra.

I hate this book. It only gives a few solutions, maybe 5 out of a 100 (if your lucky). I don't know if I am doing my work right or not. There is no way to check. Every math book I have had gives answers to odd# questions in the back, this is very helpful to see if you are going in the right direction. Not this book. You can spend hours and not know that you are doing it completely wrong. This does not help if you have 300 problems to do, and a week before class meets.

"Precalculus book with minor imperfections!" 2005-05-28
By Iggy S. (Bell, CA United States)
This textbook is one excellent aid for understanding math. The trigonometry section is the best part of the book. It is mostly self explanatory, and being that trig is one hard topic to understand, the book breaks it down to a comprehensible level. My only problem with the book is that it contains way too many word problems, which most students would like to skip. The concept checks are also a pain in the butt. My professor assigns basically all the odd problems in the section, taking me a whole day to finish the homework. There are other minor annoyances in the book. For example, the harmonic motion section only provides one example for the whole section. A good thing to have is the solutions manual. There are also way too many things to cover, and this leaves you somewaht overwhelmed. On the other hand, Lial and Hornsby provide straight forward examples, which, are sometimes way to easy in comparison to the practice problems provided. This book is however, a quality book and well presented.

The book was described as "New-used" but was far from that. The edges were torn, there was writing on 3 sides of the book in bright pink marker (impossible to hide). If it was described as "Used" I might have accepted the condition of the book. There was no writing in the book, but the outside look ridiculous. When I use a book, I don't write inside it, and I certainly don't write my name on every side of the book. The word new should be no where near the description of this book.

his books on elementary algebra, college algebra, precalculus, and calculus. His writing is clear, concise, and always on the level of the

maturity of his audience. The examples are excellent and the problems are

suitable for each book. He doesn't "dumb down" the material nor is the

presentation overly rigorous. I wish he would right a full blown 1,000 -

1,200 page three semester text for calculus.

The author does a good job of providing appropriate graphics to aid in the student's comprehension, but the text is woefully lacking. My professor, thankfully, used the book only for the exercises, which are quite extensive. Whenever I had difficulty grasping an idea and referred to the text I became completely confused, so I began recording my class and playing it back for a clear explanation. I am the type of student who can learn on my own, but that could never happen with this book.
