Neil Campbell and Jane Reece's BIOLOGY remains unsurpassed as the most successful majors biology textbook in the world. This text has invited more than 4 million students into the study of this dynamic and essential discipline. The authors have restructured each chapter around a conceptual framework of five or six big ideas. An Overview draws students in and sets the stage for the rest of the chapter, each numbered Concept Head announces the beginning of a new concept, and Concept Check questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to assess their mastery of a given concept. New Inquiry Figures focus students on the experimental process, and new Research Method Figures illustrate important techniques in biology. Each chapter ends with a Scientific Inquiry Question that asks students to apply scientific investigation skills to the content of the chapter.

This is great biology textbook with thorough explanations and helpful images. A plurality of high schools and universities will use this book for its core biology classes, making it a great resource even after the class(es) is over.

However, there is a newer 8th edition, so PLEASE either buy that edition new/used or this one used (which is actually very cheap comparatively).

Dwyer and Gruenwald's PRECALCULUS builds on the same features as their very successful COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Second Edition and COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY, Second Edition , while adding material to help students look ahead to calculus. The book is organized around a traditional table of contents, and offers a contemporary flavor through the use of the rule of four, modeling, and a strong conceptual orientation. The authors motivate students by using outstanding contemporary applications that address important topical issues, as well as entertaining and illustrative ones. The applications are woven around a carefully paced presentation of algebra and trigonometry topics. A rich variety of exercises further engage and challenge students. In PRECALCULUS, the authors assume that students have access to a variety of graphing calculator models, so generic instruction is provided. Guidelines and keystrokes for specific calculators can be found in the free, text-specific online graphing calculator manual.

 "Great to use" 2009-09-29
By Casey Martinson (California City, CA)
This book is better than the Larson text I have (7th edition). Even though it's second edition and chopped off about five or so chapters near the end to make it less than a full Pre-Calculus book. I recommend it to anyone struggling with the algebra portion of their course. He explains the concepts clearly, takes you through the example problems step-by-step, and for those people interested in applications of a subject or those notes about math that make it interesting, it's all here. The imagery ain't too bad either.

I definitely didn't know if it was all hype over this one author about how good he was at writing math texts, but I ordered mine (you can get this book for less than a dollar! great deal) and am very pleased with the outcome. It's very engaging in that he keeps you interested in what you're doing. When in doubt I definitely referred back to this book because there would be a problem or two that wasn't in my Larson text that my teacher would pull out of her [...] and it'd be similar to an example problem in this text. Anyway, I usually study from it.

Buy it, it's cheap and is worth every cent for the quality of writing and learning you'll be receiving.

"How to Make Precalculus Mystifying" 2009-02-19
By G. Wright (Sussex)
Books with titles such as X "Made Easy" or X "Demystified" should always be treated with caution and suspicion. And this is one of them. I have worked through Algebra Demystified and was pleasently surprised - but this volume did justify its title. Thinking that the same author would do something along the same lines with Precalculus Demystified - I was very disappointed. I'm not a complete dunderhead in maths but I did expect somewhat more of an explanation at each step. A word or two of WHY so-and-so is done in precalculus would not have gone amiss. This book is just another maths book with next to no explanation - just examples and problems. Some graphical illustration, for example, in Chapter 4 would have been enormously helpful. My volume is going cheap on Amazon second hand market.

"(AUTHOR) Michelle Rose Gilman is a JERK !!!" 2009-08-30
By Joel
Like another reviewer, I too purchased this text to re-sharpen old math skills, and prepare for a Fall Semester of Calculus. The book is written well and set up intelligently, but there are simply scores and scores of awful mathematical errors. It enraged me. Every problem I have to not only "double check" my own work, but ALSO DOUBLE CHECK the work of the book creators: it's that painful.

Upon emailing the Author to inform her of her shortcomings in this book, she responded the following way:

"Dear Joel,

Yes, we are aware of the unfortunate errors found in the pre calc WB. We are in the process of making corrections to the 1st edition. All of the corrections should be on the Wiley website very soon. I take offense at your language [I did swear at her - she sucks whatever]. And for your information, the copyeditor and the tech editors proof a book."

SCREW HER! No updates have been posted "very soon" on the Wiley website. I sent her then ANOTHER email, offering to NOTE ALL the mathematical typos I found and send them TO her: essentially doing a lot of hard work for free... She has ignored my offer.

It appears Michelle Rose Gilman is content with a low grade product.

Bottom line - until the REVISED EDITION of this is in print, I would buy a different book. Hopefully though Michelle gets wise and LISTS those UPDATES on WILEY.

"Great idea, but a frustrating number of errors." 2009-07-17
By Michaela Stone
My copy showed up yesterday, and my experience has been less than positive. I already own Pre-Calculus for Dummies, but was getting weary from scouring the web for worksheets and quizzes to reinforce everything I was re-learning. (It's amazing how much you can forget after 10 years outside of the classroom.) This workbook was going to allow me to be sure that I was grasping all of the material, so that I could finally crack open that Calculus I textbook and get a jump-start on the fall semester.

I was very impressed with the first few problems, as they didn't waste time with simple examples. These were nitty-gritty, down-and-dirty problems that put my mettle to the test. So far, so good. Then we hit Chapter 2, and things went downhill fast. In the span of 3 pages (26-29), there were 4 glaring errors in either examples or practice problems. The first time I went through, I assumed it had to be me that was in error. I went back and tried the problems again...still no dice. I read the step-by-step solutions to the problems, and was left more confused than when I started. I ultimately verified with a few of my mathematically inclined friends that, somehow, the folks at Wiley Publishing put out a remedial math book without bothering to check their own answers first. Even the tear-out cheat sheet in the front of the book has errors in the trig identities. If I had been addressing the material for the first time, I would have given up in frustration by page 30.

I'm still convinced that the Pre-Calculus Workbook for Dummies could be one of the best resources for people interested in learning (or relearning) the math skills that will get them ready for college level calculus. It is shame that poor proofreading has turned it into such a source of frustration.

The large number of pedagogical devices employed in this text will guide a student through the course.Integrated throughout the text, students and instructors will find Explore-Discuss boxes which encourage students to think critically about mathematical concepts. After working through the author's linear algebra done right book I came across this precalculus book. There is no better book. It has complete - and I mean complete - worked out solutions for all the odd problems. I know many students who have suffered through incredibly badly written books dealing with this subject and most, if not all, of them are. This book is a rigorous introduction to calculus - by this I mean that this book develops all ideas logically that a high school student can understand without an instructor - yes, without an instructor. All the usual topics of precalculus are covered in this book - only much better. Buy this for yourself, for your high schooler child and if you are a math teacher in a high school, at the very least, pilot this book!

 "Nice Refresher" 2009-12-25

Customer Buzz
"Will This book Show You Enough for Pre-Cal?" 2009-09-27
By THE HAPPY READER (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA)
First off let me invite you to recognize that different schools teach different parts of the mathematical spectrum for this course. But a very comprehensive course will essentially review the end of algebra II, some trig., then introduce some parts of calculus to give you an idea where your gonna be going with this stuff. Really though one could say it's just advanced algrebra dealing with new forms of functions.

Also let's understand that this book is not meant to be a textbook and thus will not be loaded with practice problems. That's not generally included in a study aid/self teaching guide like this. However, I do admit this book was short on the examples as well as practice problems, so I say this tongue in cheek.

So how does this book stack up? It's great! Really it is. It covers nearly everything that you'll be looking at in Pre-calculus. One thing it does skip though is Polynomial Functions. It does cover polynomials, even the fundamental theorem of algebra, but not the functions of polynomials. I've noticed that Forgotten Calculus (Barbara Lee) as well as Pre-Calculus Demystified (Rhonda Huettenmueller) do cover these.

For those of you looking for help in Trigonometry there is a small section here, which is helpful for most of trig. However when you get to identities this book won't be too helpful because it doesn't even cover the half-angle identities, sum-product identities, nor the very basic quotient identities. The last of these is almost too obvious to worry about (you'll see when you get a basic lesson on trig.), however the other two are very useful tools for proving two trig functions as being equivalent to each other. Also this section of the book should have several examples as the only way to really get to know how to work identities is to do large quantities of them, yet start doing them several examples are helpful. However you could always buy a solutions manual for trig textbooks that cover these so you could see several worked out examples. Honestly, don't expect to find any self teaching guide filled with enough examples on this particular subject.

Also I think it would be appropriate to introduce some information on Limits here and then review (and go more in depth in his calculus book). However Limits are not talked about in this book which is likely due to the fact that he talks about them in his next book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Calculus. I don't know how much detail he gets into on these in his next book, but I can tell you they're not talked about here.

It also would have been nice to have had a small introduction to sequences and sets here. But alas the book is found wanton.

I won't detail what the book does talk about since it's able to be previewed here on Amazon when you're logged into your account. However, I must say, those parts it does discuss are easy to understand. In order for this book to make it to a "self teaching guide status" it would need to have some more examples and practice problems (as mentioned earlier), but overall it will help you if you are trying to learn on your own or just need some clarification on lecture. I recommend it.

Overall I'd give this book a 4.7 if I could because I think that some parts could use a bit more expansion, like more examples as noted earlier , but gave it 5 stars because (can't choose 4.7 anyhow) it still is a worthy supplement.
